What Eid al-Adha is
The festival of the sacrifice, on the 10th of Dhul Hijjah, the day after the pilgrims stand at Arafah. It remembers Ibrahim’s readiness to sacrifice his son at Allah’s command, and the ram given in his place, “a great sacrifice” (Quran 37:102–107).
What the sacrifice is for: “Their meat will not reach Allah, nor will their blood, but what reaches Him is piety from you” (Quran 22:37).

The ten days before Eid al-Adha
The first ten days of Dhul Hijjah are the best days of the year for good deeds: the Prophet said no deeds are better than those done in them (Sahih al-Bukhari 969). They end with the Day of Arafah, whose fast, for those not on Hajj, expiates the sins of the year before and the year after (Sahih Muslim 1162).
For the pilgrims, Hajj runs through these days; Muslims Around the World explains its rites step by step.
The days after Eid
The 11th to the 13th of Dhul Hijjah are the days of tashriq, which the Prophet called days of eating, drinking and remembering Allah (Sahih Muslim 1141). The Quran asks believers to remember Allah in these “numbered days” (Quran 2:203), which is why the takbir continues after the prayers.
Questions about Eid al-Adha
How long after Eid al-Fitr is Eid al-Adha?
About two months and ten days: Eid al-Fitr is 1 Shawwal and Eid al-Adha is 10 Dhul Hijjah, two Hijri months later. In 2027 that is from 9 March to 16 May.
Why is Eid al-Adha sometimes on different days?
Its date depends on when Dhul Hijjah begins. Many UK mosques follow Saudi Arabia’s announcement for this Eid, as it follows the Day of Arafah, while others follow a local sighting and may celebrate a day later.
Is Eid al-Adha a public holiday in the UK?
No. Many employers and schools allow the day off on request; ask in good time, as the date of Eid al-Adha is confirmed only a few days before.
