Qurbani: the Eid al-Adha sacrifice
Eid al-Adha 1448 AH is expected on Sunday 16 May 2027, and Dhul Hijjah begins on Friday 7 May 2027.
Where the Eid al-Adha sacrifice comes from
Qurbani, or udhiyah, follows Ibrahim, who was ready to sacrifice his son and was given a ram in his place (Quran 37:102–107). The Quran pairs prayer and sacrifice: “So pray to your Lord and sacrifice” (Quran 108:2).

When, and what to avoid before it
After the Eid prayer, on the day of Eid or the days after; the schools differ on whether the last day is the 12th or the 13th of Dhul Hijjah. Someone who intends to sacrifice should not cut their hair or nails from the start of Dhul Hijjah until it is done (Sahih Muslim 1977).
Many divide the meat in three: for the household, for relatives and friends, and for those in need. Many in the UK have their qurbani carried out abroad, where it feeds families in need.
