The day of standing

On the 9th of Dhul Hijjah the pilgrims gather on the plain of Arafah, east of Makkah, in prayer from midday until sunset: the heart of the Hajj, which the Quran sets for all who are able to make the journey (Quran 3:97).

Those not on Hajj often fast the day. Asked about it, the Prophet said it expiates the sins of the year before and the year after (Sahih Muslim 1162).

Planning the Arafah fast in the UK

In the next few years Arafah falls in late spring, so in the UK the fast runs from an early Fajr to a late sunset; the table gives the times for the main cities.

Check the date in the week before. It follows the start of Dhul Hijjah, which many UK mosques take from Saudi Arabia’s announcement.
