Eid al-Adha · 16 May 2027

How the date of Eid al-Adha is set

This year’s Eid al-Adha is expected on Sunday 16 May 2027 by the calculated Umm al-Qura calendar. Where it is set by sighting the crescent, it can be a day later.

Why Eid al-Adha follows Dhul Hijjah’s start

Eid al-Adha is the 10th day of Dhul Hijjah, so its date is set the moment that month begins: on the evening of 29 Dhul Qa‘dah, if the crescent is seen, or after 30 days. The Day of Arafah, the 9th, is the day the pilgrims stand at Arafah, which ties this Eid to the sighting declared in Makkah more closely than Eid al-Fitr.

How some countries decide

  • Saudi Arabia: its Supreme Court announces the start of Dhul Hijjah after the crescent is looked for; the Hajj, Arafah and Eid in Makkah follow that announcement.
  • Türkiye: Diyanet sets its months in advance by the unified Hijri calendar of its 2016 Istanbul congress, so its Eid al-Adha is known months ahead (Diyanet, 2026).
  • Elsewhere: many countries announce after their own sighting committee meets, so a day’s difference from Saudi Arabia is common.

Eid al-Adha in the UK

Many UK mosques take Saudi Arabia’s announcement for this Eid, keeping the Day of Arafah on the day the pilgrims stand there; others follow a sighting in the UK or nearby and may hold Eid a day later.
